About Vinit Bodas
Vinit Bodas is the Founder, President, and Chief Investment Officer of Deccan Value Investors L.P., based in Greenwich, Connecticut. He founded the firm in 2004 to run a concentrated, long-horizon, global value strategy — typically five to ten positions, two or three investment decisions a year, drawn from a curated list of roughly one hundred and fifty franchise companies with sustainable moats and large addressable markets. Across his career, he has held positions in companies in more than thirty countries.
Before founding Deccan, Vinit was a partner at Brandes Investment Management in San Diego (Global Investing, 1998–2004) and at Montgomery Asset Management in San Francisco (Emerging Markets, 1994–1998). He began his career as a credit analyst at Duff & Phelps from 1990 to 1994 — the discipline that first shaped his focus on downside protection and capital preservation.
He earned his MBA at the University of Texas at Austin in 1990, where he was a Sord Scholar and on the Dean's List every semester. He is a fellow of both the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India and the Institute of Cost and Management Accountants of India, having ranked first all-India in both qualifications. He grew up in Pune, on India's Deccan Plateau — for which the firm is named.
Vinit has practiced Vipassana meditation in the tradition of Sayagyi U Ba Khin and S. N. Goenka since 1995, when he attended his first course at Dhamma Dharā in Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts. He writes about how the practice has informed his investment process here.
In 2006, Vinit and his wife Uma founded the Vijaya Foundation, a private family foundation named in honor of his grandmother — one of the first women attorneys in India. The Foundation supports education (including Teach For America, Dartmouth, and Manavyaa), Vipassana meditation centers in North America, Indian cultural and religious institutions, and Connecticut community causes. Vinit and Uma also funded the Bodas Family Chair in South Asian Studies at Dartmouth.
